Fall Fashion – For the Young and Edgy

Posted on August 28, 2009 by admin

With the approach of fall, we are all looking forward to cooler weather and a change to fall wardrobe.   I thought we would use a little different approach on the subject this time, using an article from “Who What Wear” from the Internet.  A couple of young women teamed up to create this free daily newsletter giving an update on what celebrities are wearing.   Their recent newsletter highlighted different styles for fall taken from the runways so they are extreme but they do add a bit of fantasy as we are contemplating our new fall look.

Shoes – Platform pumps are still the rage.  It seems the platforms get more pronounced and designers are really having to stretch to create something new and fresh from the same idea.   Since these platforms add so much height, it is no longer an issue if you tower over your husband or date.  Of course, you will need to use him to keep your balance since many wearers have sustained injuries from falls.  Some manufacturers have less extreme designs while creating a more moderate look and I might add, at a much lower price point.

Flashy legs – Opaque tights have been fashionable for some time but this season some of the designers have embellished their offerings with glitz.  I really like opaque tights, especially with the very short skirts but pulling off a look with glitzy legs will take some work.  Obviously, the tights need to be the focal point of the outfit and are best evening.

Chunky Chokers – Last season featured chunky jewelry but this season the necklace has been shortened to choker length while still having the large, chunky features.    The danger here is having the choker dominate if you are smaller boned or have a very feminine look.  Don’t forget that a chunky choker will add bulk to your neck so if you do not have a long, slender neck, it probably will not be a flattering look.

Display of Lingerie – Many of the styles featured deep –cut necklines, often to the waist, and revealing lacy lingerie.  I guess the lingerie is preferable to revealing practically everything but this is not a look that is becoming for anyone in my opinion.  However, if you are thinking of a career change, maybe spending lots of time on street corners, it might work.

Winter Shorts – These have been appearing for a couple of seasons but this season they are definitely a trend.  Whether they catch on with the consumer will be the question.  Opaque tights are a must and it is not a look to wear to the office.   For someone young with great legs, it could be a fun look for social occasions.

Squared Shoulders – This trend showed up on the Milan last season.  With fashion harkening back to the eighties, it is not surprising that we are continuing to see the look, albeit, more modified than last season.   This look will only work for certain body shapes.   For example, the exaggerated shoulders would give balance to a triangle shape but would add dimension in the wrong area for an inverted triangle.

Big, Oversized Coats – Oversized, slouchy coats, resembling a man’s dressing gown are the rage for fall.  We will probably not see this trend as much in Atlanta with our  mild climate but it will no doubt be an important look  in colder areas.

Thigh-High Boots – We saw some thigh-high boots last season but they are much more prevalent this season.  They come in a variety of fits so you have some flexibility when choosing.  I really like the look but how practical are they?   They would require a very short skirt or shorts, with tights, of course.   In most business settings, they would be inappropriate and the boots run in the $1000 range.  In the end, it depends on your lifestyle and budget.

Long Sleeved Mini Dresses – This is a very prominent look for fall.   In my opinion, most of the styles are out of proportion.  Balance with a very short skirt and long sleeves is hard to achieve.  This is definitely a look for the very young who want to show off a great figure and legs.

Metallics – Shiny, metallic fabrics abound for fall.  It is best to mix these with matt finishes and is definitely not for business wear.  Shiny ballerina flats give a fun, modern look to jeans.

Now you have an idea of what trends to expect when you go shopping for fall.  We will discuss later how these runway fashions are being adapted to “real” clothes that most of us would select.

Got Cankles?

Posted on August 13, 2009 by admin

The term “cankle” cannot be found in a medical dictionary and is simply a combination of calf and ankle.  It hit the pop-culture lexicon in about 2001 just as “muffin-top” became popularized with the advent of low-rise jeans to describe the roll of fat that often hangs over jeans.  Some ladies simply have inherited larger ankles; being predisposed to store extra fat in that area.  Then it might be due to overweight or retention of water for various medical reasons.  Whatever the cause, many women having this condition, are looking for solutions.

The popularity of shoe styles coming high upon the foot with straps around the ankle have caused more women to become concerned about not having trim ankles.  These shoe styles have been popular for over a year and are featured for fall as well.   Dresses show off the shoes to a much greater advantage than pants, placing much more focus on the ankle than in years past.

Women with “cankles” are resorting to all manner of solutions.  Gold’s gym declared July “Cankle Awareness” month and offers workouts to trim that area of the anatomy, while other gyms and trainers encourage extreme and intense exercises.  Plastic surgeons are performing $4000 – $ 6000 liposuction procedures and one company has developed a flip-flop to give special exercise to that area.   One of the more creative solutions it using Preparation H to shrink the tissue at the ankle just as one would use it for the treatment of hemorrhoids.  (The company stresses that Preparation H is only intended to be used for its original purpose.)  The average ankle measures 11 inches so ladies with ankles measuring larger than that will not find some of the popular styles particularly flattering.  Capri or cropped pants present the same problem.  Any style that focus attention on the ankle will be not be as flattering.

Each of us has some area of our body that we wish were different.  That is the advantage of working with an image consultant to help enhance those features that are outstanding and minimize those that you wish were different.  Some of these measures seem  a little extreme, not to mention expensive.  I would suggest shoes that don’t place emphasis on the ankle.  Trendy shoes with high vamps and/or straps around the ankle shorten the leg line, especially if you do not have the long, slender legs of a model.    Why not choose some of the fun platform styles that draw the eye down over the arch of the foot?  That gives a new, fashionable look without drawing attention to a larger ankle or shortening the leg.  Cropped pants are another style that is most attractive on the long, slender leg but shortens and widens if one has shorter legs or is heavier.

The trick is to choose those fashion options that work for you and let others wear the ones that don’t work for you.  After all, you can probably wear fashion trends that do not work on the person flaunting that little ankle and long leg.  You will look so much more fashionable by being selective in those trends that make you shine!
